7:00 PM - 8:30 PM - Main Topic: Refactoring, Patterns, new language features, code quality, and more! with Claudio Lassala

Main Topic Description: Command design pattern, Lambda Expressions, Extension Methods, fluent interfaces, refactoring, test-driven development, writing elegant code, and more. This session will cover a little bit of many things learned from projects I’ve been working on. We expect every attendee to learn a few tricks that can be applied immediately, and also to feel encouraged to go out and research more on whatever area appeals the most. Besides learning those things, we really hope attendees will start thinking and approaching their code in a different way.

Speaker Bio: Claudio Lassala is a Senior Developer at EPS Software Corp. He has presented several lectures at Microsoft events such as PDC Brazil and various other Microsoft seminars, as well as several conferences and user groups across North America and Brazil. He is a multiple winner of the Microsoft MVP Award since 2001 (for Visual FoxPro in 2001-2002, and for C# every since), an INETA speaker, and also holds the MCSD for .NET certification. He has articles published on several magazines, such as MSDN Brazil Magazine, CoDe Magazine, UTMag, Developers Magazine, and FoxPro Advisor.

Congratulations to new INETA Mentor Robin Edwards

Robin Edwards is now part of the INETA Membership Team, covering the states of WV, TN, and KY.

Robin runs the Roanoke Valley .NET User Group in western Virginia and has done a tremendous job with the developer community out there.

I’m very happy to have someone as knowledgeable and passionate about the developer community as Robin on the INETA Membership Mentor team.

Frederick .NET User Group Joins INETA

As the INETA Membership Mentor for Maryland, Delaware and Washington, DC, it's my privilege to announce that Frederick .NET User Group is now a member of INETA.

FredNUG was began last September and meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month at the Urbana Regional Library.

The next meeting will be January 28th.

The ADO.NET Entity Framework provides .NET developers with a new means of writing Data Access code using a customizable data model to query and update your data. This introductory session will give you an understanding of what the Entity Framework is all about. You will learn how to build a basic Entity Data Model and inspect it's most important parts and learn basics of querying with Entity SQL and LINQ to Entities. You will also learn how to easily access its highest level of abstraction in common data binding in a variety of application scenarios . Frederick MD User Group Meeting

In September, Frederick, MD got its own user group when FredNUG started up.

This Wednesday the group has their third meeting and their first meeting as an official INETA member group.

Intro topic: “Intro to WatiN” with Tim Plourde.

In-depth topic: “Geocoding, RSS, and Mapping, oh my!” with Andrew Duthie.

Abstract: Take a trip into the wonderful world of geolocation with Microsoft Developer Evangelist G. Andrew Duthie. Andrew will explore the use of such technologies as Windows Live Maps and RSS as data sources for geolocation, geocoding via the MapPoint Web Service, and mapping out geolocated data with the Virtual Earth Map control (including the recently previewed ASP.NET Virtual Earth Server Control). If you’re feeling lost, this tour of geolocation tools and technologies may be just what you need to find yourself.

Heroes Happen Here DC Launch Event Photos

I was working the the Heroes Happen Here DC Event today for the launch of Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2008 and Server 2008.

Local Developer Evangelist Andrew Duthie even spoke at the keynote and had his own breakout session.

Congrats, Andrew!

I spent the whole day at the INETA and MVP booths, so I missed his session.

But I did end up with some swag. :)

So, You Want to Start a User Group?

So, you want to start a User Group. That's great.

Chris Williams has some thoughts on the subject. (21 to be exact)

Some items I'd like to add to his post:

1. INETA (www.ineta.org) won't even talk to you until you've had at least one meeting on your own. Then you go to their site and fill out an application. (You'll need to register on their site first.)
2. CodeZone (www.codezone.com) works basically the same way. Both of these will net your group some free swag, and INETA will get you a couple speakers per year.
3. Find out who your DE (Developer Evangelist) is and contact him/her as soon as possible. If you're tapped into the community and serious about starting a user group, you should probably already know who this is. If not, try hitting some MSDN Roadshows or other groups in your state.

If you're in the DC Metro Area and thinking of starting a user group, here is some information you might like to know:
