Windows Calculator on the Vegas Strip

If you want to see how much money you've won (or lost) at the casinos, then you can head over to the Paris hotel and add it all up for the entire Strip to see.

This isn't the first time, something funny appeared on the huge electronic billboard outside the Paris.

After the BSOD on the Strip incident, you'd think they'd lock the machine down or move the sign to some kind of embedded form of Windows to avoid this sort of thing.

I'll be back in Vegas next month for Mix08 and I will definitely have my eye on this sign. :)

You Know What Really Grinds My Gears: Primaries

I hesitate to discuss politics on this blog, but I heard something on the radio that really ticked me off.

I was listening to WTOP news talk about Super Tuesday and how this year was unusual as the outcome by now "has usually been decided" and "the polls are usually irrelevant."

Outcomes decided? Irrelevant?

I find these terms offensive in reference to elections and was deeply disturbed to hear "journalists" glibly accepting this as fact.

I was never a big fan of the way primary season is run during the US Presidential election.

Candidates tend to drop out right after the Iowa caucus and the New Hampshire primary, before resident in the other 48 states even get to weigh in at the polls.

I've always lived in a state where the primary came pretty late in the game and the candidates had always been chosen.

I've always felt that I never had my say.

Even though my one vote is infinitesimally small, it is my right in a democracy to have a vote equal to other in society.

The Presidential election is held nationally, so why aren't the primaries?

Two More Cables Cut

Who needs bot-nets when you have scissors?

Bruce Schneier talks about the recent cable cuts that have disrupted Internet service throughout the Middle East and Asia, including a new Fifth Cable.

Although one of the cables may not have been cut, but rather taken offline due to a power issue, the effect is still the same.

Looking at the map of undersea cables connecting the world together, you can see that there are some light spots in coverage, including (especially) the impacted areas.

Is this a run of bad luck or is something more going on here?
