The WTC was very much a symbol of New York, even to New Yorkers who thought little of it's architectural merit. Most people thought it was so ugly and so out of place, it became elegant.
Since lower Manhattan sits on a massive harbor, you could see the Twin Towers from just about anywhere in the New York Area. Whether it was from Queens, New Jersey, or Staten Island, the two monoliths were a part of our live whether or not you worked in lower Manhattan. Every time I flew back from Germany, seeing the Twin Towers told me I was home.
