The WTC was very much a symbol of New York, even to New Yorkers who thought little of it's architectural merit. Most people thought it was so ugly and so out of place, it became elegant.

MVC-004FI grew up with the World Trade Center as part of the New York City skyline. The two giants rising confidently well above the rest represented New York, a city of giants amongst giants.

Since lower Manhattan sits on a massive harbor, you could see the Twin Towers from just about anywhere in the New York Area. Whether it was from Queens, New Jersey, or Staten Island, the two monoliths were a part of our live whether or not you worked in lower Manhattan.

Every time I flew back from Germany, seeing the Twin Towers told me I was home.

The WTC as seen from Downtown Jersey City. The new Hudson-Bergen light rail line provided great vantage points of the WTC As did any kind of ferry ride in and around Manhattan.

Another shot from the World Financial Center ferry dock. Imagine looking up and seeing the Towers with the Winter Garden at its feet. Even in a place like this, there are still small cavernous spaces.

The plaza was a nice place to relax, talk, and have lunch. Other tall buildings abound in lower Manhattan. But none were this tall.
